Komi is a member of the Permic branch of the Uralic language family with about 225,000 speakers. It is spoken mainly in the Komi Republic (Коми Республика) in the northeast of European Russia. There are also some Komi speakers in the nearby Perm Krai (Пермский край) and Kirov Oblast (Кировская область). Komi is closley related to Udmurt.
Komi dialects
- Komi-Zyrian (Коми кыв) is spoken in the Komi Republic by 160,000 people, according to the 2010 census. Komi-Zyrian is the basis for written Komi, and is also known as Komi, Zyrian or Zyryan.
- Komi-Permyak (Перем коми кыв / коми-пермяцкӧй кыв) is spoken in Perm Krai by about 63,000 people, according to the 2010 census. It has co-official status with Russian in the Komi Okrug (Коми-Пермяцкий округ / Перым Коми кытш).
- Komi-Yazva (Коми-Ёдз кыл) is spoken mainly in Krasnovishersky District (Красновишерский район) in the northeast of Perm Krai by about 2,000 people.
Written Komi
Komi was written with the Old Permic or Abur alphabet from 1372 to the 17th century, when the Cyrillic alphabet was adapted to write the language. A new version of the Cyrillic alphabet, known as the Molodtsov alphabet (Молодцов анбур), was introduced for Komi in the 1920s. From 1930-1936 Komi was written with a version of the Latin alphabet, after which the Cyrillic alphabet was used again.
In 1815, the first book Komi, a vaccination manual, was published.
